Woo Hoo! We’ve got our games submitted and approved for Gary Con IX (March 23 – 26, 2017). Below is a sneak peek at our WEGS Old Skool Fantasy and Shuffling Horror events. Gary Con is a yearly convention held in honor of Gary Gygax, the creator of Dungeons & Dragons. This will be our fourth trek to wondrous Lake Geneva, WI (the place where Gygax lived, the first Gen Con was held, and TSR (the publisher of D&D) was based). Yeah… we’re always super excited about Gary Con!
The WEGS Old Skool Fantasy setting is designed for over-the-top dungeon crawl fun. Inspired by the earliest editions of Basic Dungeons & Dragons, character creation is a breeze and the heroic action is epic. All sessions are intros to WEGS, our Wickedly Errant Game System.
Here’s the menu:
The Caves of Utter Chaos (WEGS BOSS)
GM: Larry Wickman
When: Thurs @2pm; Fri @10am; Sat @10am and 2pm
Duration: 4 hours
You’ve heard of the Caves of Chaos, perhaps? Well, these are the caves below those caves that nobody dares to enter. Get ready for insane dungeoncrawling fun with the BOSS (Basic Old Skool System). Full-blown heroes will be created in minutes and then stuck in a dungeon brimming with terrible foes, nasty traps, and treasure galore. Fueled by 2d6 and 2d10, BOSS is a stripped down version of WEGS (the Wickedly Errant Game System). Fun rules! Wild dice rolls! Wicked adventure! All rules taught. No XP needed. Join us for one or more sessions if you like!
Rifting The Jarl (WEGS Old Skool Fantasy)
GM: Tim W
When: Fri @8pm
Duration: 4 hours
Get ready to slip and slide your way through Gary Gygax’s classic module, Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl (G2)! Here’s the twist: we are using the WEGS Old Skool Fantasy system. Fantastic heroes will be created in minutes and ready to go on a giant slaying expedition. Don’t worry about the system; just worry about the frost giants and staying alive. Rules taught – all you need is a sense of adventure to get started. Bring your lucky 2d6 and 2d10 (%), the only dice you’ll need for WEGS. Let’s dungeon party like it’s 1978!
The Shuffling Horror Events (1.5 hour)
Roswell 51 – Thurs @10am and @8pm. Sunday @ Noon.
Pittsburgh 68 – Thurs @10pm
Get ready for the retro cinematic chills and thrills of our Shuffling Horror system! We are running three Shuffling Horror games on Thursday. For those who like 1950s space invasion horror, two session of Roswell 51 are planned (10am and 8pm). For those who like Night of the Living Dead style zombie survival fun, Pittsburgh 68 kicks off at 10pm.
We might try to add a couple more events, like our traditional Sat. Nite Special event and Sunday closer, “How Many Heroes Does It Take To Kill A Dragon“. Problem is the heroes killed our dragon last year… Stay tuned!

Gary Con VIII is just around the corner! If you are attending and looking for some dungeon fun to fit into your schedule, have I got a deal for you… Most of my WEGS Old Skool games are full, but I can still fit a couple of Hirelings and Henchmen into each session. H&H are entry level heroes there to assist the party (i.e. you run into the room first and suffer the consequences). All you need to do is hack and slash in style. Does this sounds like your kind of fun?
“But… I don’t know this WEGS system at all!”
No worries! Here’s how easy it is to be a sell-sword and hired bowstring in WEGS:
You start with a heroic-looking mini and five poker chips. This makes you a Level 5 Hero. Everything about you is “5″ or “55″. You have 55 Hit Points. You have 55% Armour Class. You have a 55% chance to hit something with your sword or arrow. When you hit, you do 5 x d6 damage. You move 5 Squares per action.
And you won’t even need a character sheet (but if you survive the adventure, I’ll give you one as a graduation present).
“That’s pretty darn easy, so far.”
You will also get three skill cards and you can use only 1 every attack:
+20% to hit (used to increase your chance to hit to 75%)
+ 4 Strength (used to increase your damage to 9 x d6)
-20% AC (used to decrease foe’s AC roll)
You strategically choose the best attack form for each strike.
As noted, I can fit a couple of folks into each game in this capacity. There is also *some* wiggle room to fit you in as a spellslinger, too (if you arrive early). If this sounds like your kind of fun, come find the WEGS games (just look for the table with a shiny holy grail filled with poker chips). Our full list of events and room locations can be found on the Gary Con site (here) or on our blog link below.

On Friday at Gary Con this year, I am running a series of events in honor of Gary Gygax, the father of role-playing games. The series is composed of three consecutive events, each dedicated to exploring one of the classic adventure modules in Gygax’s “Giant Series” (aka the G series). Get ready to go head-to-head against the hill, frost, and fire giants. Actually, in this case, it would be head-to-kneecap…
For convention play, games will focus on each module’s key scenes and encounters, allowing players to face some of the best challenges and most fearsome opponents found in these classic modules. WEGS Old Skool Fantasy rules will be used to run the encounters.
The Wickedly Errant Game System allows quick character generation and encourages over-the-top heroic encounters. In each session, players will get to experience the full gamut of adventure gaming: from rolling up characters to taking a heroic last stand. All rules will be taught.
Here’s what’s on our giant menu:
G1-Storming the Steading (WOSF)
When: Friday @ 10am – 2pm
Get ready to take on some Hill Giants and their friends as we throw down the classic Gary Gygax module, Steading of the Hill Giant Chief (G1). What will your band of heroes discover within the timber fortress of the Nosnra The Despicable!?!
G2-Rifting the Jarl (WOSF)
When: Friday @ 2pm – 6pm
Get ready to slip and slide your way through Gary Gygax’s classic module, The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl (G2). What adventure awaits you in the icy stronghold of Grugnur, the Lord of Frost Giants?!?
G3-Playing with Hellfire (WOSF)
When: Friday @ 8pm – Midnite
Get ready to fan some giant flames, as you venture into the fiery realm of Gary Gygax’s classic module, Hall of the Fire Giant King (G3). Do you have what it takes to extinguish the plans of Dread King Snurre Iron Belly and his cohorts?!?
If you cannot join us for these sessions,
we are running several other WEGS Old Skool events at Gary Con.

We are gearing up for our fantastic journey to Gary Con VIII (March 3 – 6, 2016), a yearly convention held in honor of Gary Gygax, the creator of Dungeons & Dragons. This is our third march to wondrous Lake Geneva, WI – the place where fantasy roleplaying games were born. We have prepared a sumptuous menu of WEGS Old Skool Fantasy events to sate the hearts of those seeking marvelous adventure.
All sessions are introductions to WEGS (the Wickedly Errant Game System), a system that is a homage to the earliest days of Dungeons & Dragons. Rules will be taught. Our Old Skool Fantasy is designed for over-the-top dungeon crawl fun; character creation is a breeze and the heroic action is epic. Here’s what’s on the menu:
B2 Keep on the Borderlands (WOSF)
Thursday @ 2pm and 8pm. Duration: 3.5 hours.
Get ready for classic dungeon crawling fun! We’re cracking open Gary Gygax’s module Keep on the Borderlands and heading straight into the dread Caves of Chaos. The cultists and minotaur and owlbear and oozes are waiting! Maybe even a wight if you pick the wrong cave. Fantastic heroes will be created in minutes and, moments later, face-to-face with terrible foes.
March 4th! Events
Friday. Three Events: 10am, 2pm, and 8pm. Duration: 3.5 hours.
We have a special series of games planned for Friday, March 4th, the day designated as GM Day in honor of Gary Gygax (who passed away on March 4th, 2008). This full event info is posted here: Against The Giants at Gary Con.
Dingbitt’s Dunge O Doom (WOSF)
Saturday @ 10am and 2pm. Duration: 3.5 hours.
A rag-tag party of sword-n-sorcery heroes are plunged into the randomly generated dungeon run by Dingbitt, a devilish halfling rogue. His magic dungeon is chock full of treasure, traps, and monsters. The deeper the party delves, the bigger the booty (and the greater the peril, of course). It is up to the heroes to decide what it shall be: fabulous trove, worthy opponents or, perhaps, just to find a way out? Priorities change fast after you leave Level 1!
The Sat Nite Special: Sci Fi Double Feature
Saturday @ 8pm and 10pm. Duration: 2 hours.
Get ready for some retro chills and thrills! We have back-to-back sessions of our Shuffling Horror game planned. Pittsburgh 68 kicks off at 8pm for those who like Night of the Living Dead style zombie survival fun. Roswell 51 kicks off at 10pm for those who like 1950s space invasion horror.
Last but not least… our Gary Con finale…
How Many Heroes Does It Take To Slay A Dragon? (III)
Sunday 12pm – 2pm. Duration: 2 hours
Come join the dragon-slaying party and let’s find out. This will be the third time we have asked this question at Gary Con. The answer was not nine in 2014. The answer was not ten in 2015. Players are herewith warned: Mighty Jrragnaraffen, the magical glaive dragon, has had yet another year to recoil and grow larger. Screaming and running off the edge of the battle mat is always an option. New players are most welcome as the WEGS Basic Old Skool System (BOSS) rules will be used. No character sheets: just pick your class (Warrior, Ranger, Mage, Sage, Trickster), take five poker chips, four dice, three skill cards, and you are ready for adventure.

December 4th, 2015
The first WEGS Old Skool game for Gary Con VIII 2016 has been officially submitted: “How Many Heroes Does It Take To Slay A Dragon?” This one was a no-brainer for me: each year I finish the con with it. No matter how tired we all are at then end of a full weekend of gaming (binge fantasy rpg gaming IS hard work, folks), this scenario never disappoints. You never say no to the chance to go head-to-head with a dragon!
This will be the third time I am running HMHDITTSAD? at Gary Con. Each year players seek to definitively answer the question posed in the title, and each year, they have failed. In 2014, nine heroes tried to dispatch Jrragnaraffen, the magical glaive dragon. Nine was not the answer. In 2015, ten more heroes lined up for the honor, and, while they put up a valiant effort, they came up a little short. One wizard was clinging to her neck as she flapped her heavy wings and headed off into the sunset of that con. We called that wizard “Dinner”.
Needless to say, Jrragnaraffen is getting very tired of all this nonsense (which is not good news for those who show up for this year’s game). After the first failed foray, I outlined the rules allowing Jrragnaraffen to grow stronger with each passing year. In game terms, she possess an equal number of blood chips as there have been Gary Cons. So, this year she starts with eight blood chips, which is between 400 and 800 bonus wound points. For those wondering, each chip grants her ((d6+4) x 10) wounds.
And these blood chips supplement her 264 starting wounds! For those wondering on this total, she is treated as three Level 8 monsters. Each level earns the monster 11 wounds, so Level 8 monsters begin with 88 wounds. She can take a lot of damage!
If at first you don’t succeed, just blame it on the guys who couldn’t finish the job last year…
