FAQ - WEGS 101 Skill Deck (2007 Edition)

Q: So what's in the deck?

A: All the skills and spells for each of the 5 Arks:
Warrior, Ranger, Trickster, Mage and Sage.

Q: How about a little more detail? That's kinda vague...

A: Sure! There's 56 cards in total: 8 skills each for the Warrior, Ranger and Trickster. 16 skills each for the Mage and Sage (spells included).

Q: On page 57 in the WEGS 101 book, it says that there's only 7 skills for the Warrior, Ranger and Trickster. What are the extra cards?

A: Well, "Blitz" has been added to the Warrior and Ranger set. The Trickster has a new skill called "Dodger". The Mage and Sage have two new Insanity skills, "Curses" and "Praetervision".

Q: So how do I use this deck?

A: Simply divvy the deck up into the 5 Arks (each card is tagged on the top for quick sorting), distribute each stack to the appropriate player, and then start the game!

Q: What if I have more than one Warrior or Ranger in my game?

A: Folks can share their cards (just sit the Arks next to each other at the table). This actually has some value as the players can discuss strategy.

Q: You mean each player should have their own set?

A: No - though, that's ok, too! Having two sets or more will give you lots of options, unless you're running a game where everyone plays a Mage! An additional set or two is a good thing, especially as this should give the Kreator or Minion Master a set of spells for reference. We do this at conventions - it's always good to have an extra set of spells on the "house" side.

Q: Are there any benefits for each player having his/her own set?

A: GameWick says "Yes!". Players comfortable with the rules of WEGS 101 could be encouraged to create multi-skilled characters that blend the skills of all other Arks. Players could customize their hybrid Ark from the full deck. The Kreator of the game should determine "hand size", though (somewhere between 7 and 11 cards could work well). The player would then choose that many skills for their Ark. This would warp the game a bit, but be fun none-the-less. Get ready for a Warrior-Mage or Ranger-Trickster!

Q: Wow, that's a cool concept! Any more advice for the Kreator who runs such a game?

A: Sure - don't let it warp the game too much! You can refer to an Ark's Strength score to restrict the number of skills allowed from the appropriate Ark type. A Warrior Strength of 3 would allow an Ark to have a maximum of 3 Warrior skills, and so on. That's the price for multi-classing in WEGS.

Q: Back to the point... Are these poker quality cards?

A: Printed on heavy cardstock, the deck is the same size as a standard playing card deck. Our print runs are quite small and those professional card printing places would charge an arm-and-a-leg for casino quality card sets.

Q: And lastly, do I really need these cards to play WEGS?

A: Nope. The WEGS 101 book contains all the skill and spell info for game play. These just help to make the game feel more Vegas-like. They really help to get the game started quickly, too! Skill cards were critical for our quick-start games at conventions. Players love 'em - that's why we printed them!
